Since the lock-down began we have been working at trying to get essentials to communities in Khayelitsha who are being adversely affected. We have managed to provide for nearly 100 vulnerable families across 4 areas of Khayelitsha so far.
But the principles of this feeding initiative are as important as the food itself. We decided that the best route would not be to go through an external organization, but rather to use the internal systems of the community itself.
We are not a charity, or an organization, but a network of friends, both inside and outside of Khayelitsha, working hard to try provide for people who are falling through the cracks of other systems. We work directly with community leaders on the ground, who let us know what’s needed and who is most vulnerable. Our process is to take donations, and then use those donations to buy essentials. We then deliver those to leaders in 4 areas (Zwelitsha, iLitha Park, Site B, and Site C). The system has been very successful so far, and we are looking to keep going for as long as we can.
It’s been an extraordinarily heartening example of ordinary people from all over, coming together to look after each other.
Currently raising funds to put together 40 food parcels for families in Khayelitsha.
